With self-professed songs about whiskey and women, Indy sweethearts Jascha, are starting to make a stir with their own brand of folk inspired indie jams. Formed in early 2009 by singer/songwriter Jacsha Updike, brother Jordan Updike, Lauren Moore, Nathan Lucas and Bryan Unruh, the band’s premier album, There’s Nothing Like Love for Making You Miserable is a whiskey-fueled jaunt through pretty much any influential folk artist you can name.
Citing influences as far spread as Kurt Vonnegut, Elliot Smith, Bob Dylan - to Ryan Adams, Sufjan Stevens and of course whiskey (seriously, they never stop talking about the stuff), Jascha blend these inputs into sorrowful, yet fun, folk music. This isn’t just an acoustic guitar and harmonica ordeal either; Jascha keeps things interesting with banjo, glockenspiel, accordion, mandolin and horns. While the band has been mostly contained to Indianapolis thus far, they plan to tour the Midwest in the coming months, bringing with them the same kind of no-nonsense takeover effect they’ve had in Indiana. Drawing comparisons to fellow Indy all-stars, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, are certainly a band on the rise and worthy of lending an ear to. And oh yeah, whiskey!
