Nerd alert: Let's combine the grace and beauty of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's constant collaborations, the Pulitzer-prize winning writer Cormac McCarthy, and a story about a man and his son crossing the devastated landscape of the US in search of any life. What do you get? The new soundtrack for one of McCarthy's finest storylines, The Road. The film, which is set to release on Thanksgiving day, has seen constant setbacks during it's production but none of it has kept the excitement around it down. Add Cave and Ellis to the mix and you might just shiver in anticipation.
Cave and Ellis have been making music together for almost fifteen years through various bands and side projects. Recently the two have also been working on film scores for some of Hollywood's bigger productions such as The Assasination of Jesse James and The Propostition. Though both of these projects have had a strong western genre influence in their scores and storylines, The Road offers an entirely different plot to compose around. This is the end of the world - there's nothing left except for this father and son except for the hope that there might be something beyond the horizon. Cave and Ellis created an equally erie soundtrack to accompany Mr. Viggo Mortenson's trek across America, featuring the piano and violin to add warmth to the percussive loops that represent the threat in his post-apocolyptic world.
You can hear Cave and Ellis's collaboration on November 25th when the film priemeres up against The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Ninja Assassin. The soundtrack will be released digitally November 23rd and physically January 12th.
