“Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” is a wildly popular song. It’s one of those songs that you wish you could erase from time and then rewrite yourself. The Frankie Valli hit peaked at number two on the Billboard charts in 1967, and was recently used in that Planter’s Peanut commercial where that beautiful on the inside (ugly) girl used a peanut as perfume, causing guys all around her to swoon. It was also the song that Heath Ledger’s character sang in Ten Things I Hate About You to try and gain Julia Stiles’ attention.
This catchy, cute, seemingly harmless tune was turned on its head when Muse grabbed a hold of it sometime in 2002. The thing is, Muse doesn’t really do anything different with the song. They keep the same lyrics, and keep it rather slow (minus the chorus, but even that is pretty tame for the sometimes seizure inducing Muse) – but Muse makes naturally sexy music, so “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” turns into something naturally sexy. Frankie Valli couldn’t keep his eyes off this person because he wanted to take them to a soda shop and possibly hold hands. Matthew Bellamy’s staring problem stemmed from ideas that weren’t exactly expressed on “Leave It To Beaver.”
And yes, I know Damien Rice includes part of the chorus in “The Blower’s Daughter.” But we already covered him and “Creep” here.
