There are super groups, then there is Flowers of Hell. This sixteen piece orchestral rock group is strong in size and on their new album Come Hell or High Water, the band is strong in support too. Members from some of rock's finest modern acts contributed to the band's sophomore album including members of Broken Social Scene, former tour mates My Bloody Valentine, Guided By Voices, British Sea Power, and Bat for Lashes, bringing the tally to over thirty contributing musicians. That's a hell of a roster for an album. Musician Greg Jarvis originally started Flower of Hell in 2002 and the project has slowly expanded from it's roots in a studio in London to a transglobal music project.
Come Hell or High Water was largely shaped by each background of the contributing band members as well as Jarvis's experiences with timbre-to-shape synaesthetic visions. For those who never took a real science course or don't have Wikipedia, that means Jarvis arrange songs based on what he saw when his sound perception and visual perception intermingled into one image. "I see sounds," Jarvis explained in a press release about Flowers of Hell. "When I hear sounds, I see each timbre in front of me as shapes that follow patterns, often gliding, pulsing and swirling, while the rhythmn and timing interlock them all." If that doesn't make it clear enough for you, check out NASA's video for the 2009 Discovery voyage. NASA was so taken with Flowers of Hell's music that they used it to create a video to chronicle Discovery's journey through space. It's a perfect explanation as to what Jarvis is shooting for. Come Hell or High Water releases June 15th.
