Crate Digging 101 Lesson 7: Genre Overview
Record stores break it down by genre, and we break it down even more.
First year crate diggers will notice most record stores have divided up the vinyl into different style categories. Usually they’re broken down into groupings of Rock/Pop, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Folk, etc. Some have Hip Hop and Alternative or New Wave bins as well. I personally prefer newly released, sealed albums separated from the used albums.
The Rock/Pop and Soul categories are usually the largest...

Nice To Meet You: USS Leland
Leland Lewis honors grandfather with catchy tunes.
I love my grandparents, and I’m sure you love yours, too. But Leland Lewis has decided to make all of us look bad and show the ultimate respect for his grandpa, Rutherford Garry.
Leland’s grandpa fought in World War II, and helped raise Leland when he was little. When Rutherford passed away, Leland started to find out more and more about his grandpa, which led to writing songs in honor of his grandpa’s amazing life.
USS Leland is set to release a three song EP on September 21 through CDBaby entitled Redemption. Redemption features Garry’s old accordion that Leland found while rummaging through his grandpa’s stuff, and a flute and guitar. Have a listen to one of the tracks below, and, if you are like me, maybe put a little bit more thought into your grandparent’s next birthday card.

Crate Digging 101 Lesson 6: Cover Songs
Cover songs might be a tip off to a cool record.

The Beatles’ Yesterday is the top recorded song of all time, with versions by Elvis, jazzman Bud Shanks and boogaloo kings Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers. A fresh take on a classic, for me, is exciting in a mix, because it is something familiar in a new wrapping...

Lollapalooza: Sunday
We catch X Japan, Frank Turner and the Arcade Fire during Sunday's line-up
Sunday may have started with a drizzle but definitely ended with a bang. With acts like Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, Yeasayer, and the National dominating the end of the fest concert goers had loads of options on how to spend the last day of Lollapalooza. Dominick parked himself at the Budweiser stage to be a front-line warrior for Arcade Fire, while Amy wandered around and caught some amazing acts on the North stages...

Lollapalooza: Saturday
The south field takes over our coverage with Social Distortion, Gogol Bordello, and Against Me!
Saturday was unofficial punk day at Lollapalooza. Social Distortion, Gogol Bordello, and heavy hitters Green Day dominated the South field, while indie rock acts stayed on the North field. Dominick braved the South field to witness some real rock and roll.
The Morning Benders: Noon-12:30, Sony Bloggie stage
Maybe it was the combination of post-Friday night lethargy and the Morning Benders’ brand of dreamy, spacey pop, but the crowd only managed light applause throughout...
